LA LIGA HIGHLIGHT: BARCELONA 2-0 ATHLETIC BILBAO

Goals from Lionel Messi and Paco Alacer makes Barcelona remain unbeaten with nine games left of their unrelenting march towards the Spanish league title.

If the reaction to his goal was different there was nothing new about the finish itself.

Lionel Messi was delighted after opening the scoring for Barcelona as they secured a victory at home to Athletic Bilbao.
Messi shoots from the edge of the penalty area the way mere mortals shoot from the edge of the six-yard box – the ball goes from boot to back of the net in same hearbeat, the keeper just as helpless to make a save.

It was his 25th goal in La Liga this season and this is the ninth consecutive season he has managed a quarter-of-a-century of goals in the domestic competition.

There was a shadow boxing celebration from Lionel Messi after he applied the knockout punch in Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.

It was his 25th goal in La Liga this season and this is the ninth consecutive season he has managed a quarter-of-a-century of goals in the domestic competition.

He had threatened as early at the 4th minute with a free-kick but the ball stayed out of Kepa Arrizabalaga’s goal from a few minutes more.

Alcacer mobbed by his team-mates, including Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, following his well-taken goal.

Messi weaves his way through the Athletic Bilbao defence, with the Barcelona defender proving very difficult to deal with.

When the first goal came Messi started the move playing the ball out to Jordi Alba.

He crossed from the left and Paco Alcacer passed the ball into the net for 1-0 after just eight minutes.

It could have been 2-0 on 10 minutes when Messi ran rings around two Athletic defenders but couldn’t quite get past a third. With Barcelona’s next attack he forced Kepa into a full-length save. The Athletic keeper then kept him out at his shot at near post.

It wasn’t just Messi as Barcelona laid siege to Athletic’s goal. Coutinho took the paint off of the underside of the crossbar. It was the 38th time this season that Barcelona had hit the frame of the goal.

Dembele should then have scored his second goal for Barcelona in four days but he hit Alba’s cross tamely at Kepa.

Barcelona had had seven shots on target in the first half an hour and the only surprise was that they had only scored once. That changed with the next attack.

Paulinho sprayed the ball wide to Dembele. The Frenchman might have closed his eyes and swung a leg when he first arrived. But he’s oozing self confidence these days and he calmly picked out Messi who took one touch on the edge of the area and then buried his shot into Kepa’s left-hand corner just under his dive.

He had threatened as early at the 4th minute with a free-kick but the ball stayed out of Kepa Arrizabalaga’s goal from a few minutes more.
Barcelona brought on Andres Iniesta and supporters started singing for him to stay at the club at the end of this season. His move to China looks all but decided. Increasingly it seems he will sign off with a league title at the very least.

Barcelona will have far tougher tests before the end of the season but they go into the international break in three competitions and clear favourites to win at least two of those.
