Official: Arsenal sign Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient for £8m

Arsenal have completed the £8million signing of midfielder Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient.

The 19-year-old, who has joined the Gunners just a day after Uruguay international Lucas Torreira signed for £25m, got straight down to business on Wednesday by training with his new team-mates.

Before training, Guendouzi posed for a series of photos as Arsenal supporters caught first glimpse of their new signing, who bears a striking resemblance to Chelsea’s David Luiz.

Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juventus) – Free

Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen) – £20m

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund) – £17m

Lucas Torreira (Sampdoria) – £25m

Matteo Guendouzi (Lorient) – £8m

Overall spend: £70m.

Guendouzi, Arsenal’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window, has been handed the No 29 shirt.

Guendouzi broke into Lorient’s first team two years ago and made 20 appearances last season.

Guendouzi progressed through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain’s academy prior to joining Lorient back in 2014.

On signing for the North London outfit, Guendouzi told the club’s website: ‘It’s something I’m immensely proud of.

‘Arsenal have always been the team closest to my heart and a side I’ve wanted to join since I was a child.
It gives me great pride – it’s incredible. I hope I can do great things here. It doesn’t get any better than coming to a club like this, with so much history, like Arsenal. I’m hugely proud.’

The 6ft 1in France youth international will be one for the future at Arsenal and Unai Emery has labelled him a ‘talented midfielder’ with ‘big potential’.

Emery, preparing for his first season as Arsenal manager, said: ‘We are delighted Matteo is joining us. He is a talented young player and a lot of clubs were interested in him.

‘He has big potential and gained good first-team experience last season with Lorient. He wants to learn and improve and will be an important part of our first-team squad.’

Guendouzi will join up with fellow new signings Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Bernd Leno and Torreira and will look to bed in quickly ahead of the 2018-19 season.
