Official: Chelsea sign £57m Jorginho and Maurizio Sarri

Maurizio Sarri has started his Chelsea reign by snapping up former Napoli charge Jorginho for £57million.

The move follows Sarri’s confirmation as Chelsea manager on Saturday morning. Jorginho was a key target for Manchester City all summer but Chelsea managed to steal a march on them.

City have slammed Napoli as ‘unprofessional’ and claim Jorginho has been forced to sign for Chelsea against his wishes, despite Jorginho’s claiming he is ‘ecstatic’ to have moved to the London club.

Club sources say that the midfielder, announced as a Chelsea player after Maurizio Sarri’s appointment, had told City as recently as Thursday that he still wanted to play for Pep Guardiola.

City claim Napoli have ‘bullied’ Jorginho into choosing Stamford Bridge and that the Blues offering an extra €10m (£8.8m) swayed Aurelio De Laurentiis into doing a U-turn on their agreement.

Even so, Jorginho said: ‘I am absolutely ecstatic to be here at Chelsea. It is not easy to become part of such a big team so I am very, very happy.

‘I am excited to play in such an intense league, for a team that gives everything to pJorginho’s agent, Joao Santos, was not able to persuade De Laurentiis to honour a deal they had effectively shaken hands on with City.

It is also claimed that Napoli threatened the Italy international with having to see out the remaining two years of his contract at Stadio San Paolo if he rejected Chelsea.

‘We have never seen an agreement reneged on like this before,’ one City source said.

Guardiola is thought to have backed City’s decision not to become embroiled in a bidding war with Chelsea and may not sign an alternative target this summer. Play and win.
