Alaves 1-0 Real Madrid: Julen Lopetegui on hot seat as Madrid have gone four games without a victory

Real Madrid’s dismal run continued as Manu Garcia’s last-gasp header claimed a dramatic 1-0 LaLiga win for Deportivo Alaves.

On as a second-half substitute, Garcia capitalised on terrible Madrid marking to nod home from point-blank range in the final minute of stoppage time and punish Madrid’s profligacy at the other end.

It was nothing more than Alaves deserved on the balance of the game, with Madrid’s lacklustre attacking play coming back to haunt them once again.

Real Madrid: (4-3-3) Courtois; Odriozola, Varane, Ramos, Nacho; Modric, Casemiro (Asensio 62), Kroos, Bale (Junior 80), Benzema (Mariano 46), Ceballos

Unused subs: Navas, Vazquez, Llorente, Reguilon

Goals: None

Alaves: (4-3-3) Pacheco; Navarro, Laguardia, Maripan (Aguirregabiria 88), Duarte; Brasanac, Pina, Mubarak (Sanchez 74); Ibai (Sobrino 67), Calleri, Jony

Unused subs: Ely, Sivera, Burgui, Baston

Goals: Sanchez 90+5

Yellow cards: Mubarak.

Julen Lopetegui’s side have now gone three LaLiga matches without a goal for the first time since March 2002, and have lost three of their last four fixtures in all competitions.

Gareth Bale went off injured before the end. His strike partner Karim Benzema never made it that long – hooked at half time, now seven games without a goal. Madrid can’t score at one end and look vulnerable at the other.

Madrid are crying out for someone as reliable in front of goal as Cristiano Ronaldo. They were left with 18-year-old Vinicius Junior trying to find the net.

Madrid were up to six hours without a goal by half-time and for the first time this season they had reached half time in the league away from home without scoring.

Coach Lopetegui’s patience had ran out with Benzema. Mariano Diaz warmed up through the break and replaced the French forward at the restart.

Madrid immediately carried more threat although it was Alaves that almost took the lead.

Thibaut Courtois saved from Ruben Duarte. The shot was from a long way out but with the Belgium keeper unable to hold it Real Madrid were lucky the rebound ran to safety.
