Karim Benzema got a last minute winner for Real Madrid that saved them from what would have been another sorry episode in their miserable season.
They were seconds from dropping two home points against bottom club Huesca playing their first ever league match in the Santiago Bernabeu.
Madrid were still ragged at the back with the usual free-way down Marcelo’s flank and too much space in front of their defence. Chimy Avila could have put his team back in front before the break but he leant back and blazed his shot over from the edge of the area.
Madrid finally had the lead and with a goal from two yards out much like the first. Bale should have made it a hat-trick of close-range goals but he put Odriozola’s cross over from inside the six-yard box. It was easier to score and with the chance to put the result beyond doubt passed up Huesca saw a crack in the door and when Xabier Etxeita leaned on it, it opened wide.
The cross came in from the left and the centre-back headed past Luca Zidane to make it 2-2.
The Huesca supporters were again signing ‘yes we can’ and the visitors seemed to believe more than the home side. Manchester City loanee Yangel Herrera tested Luca Zidane with a shot from distance but they were undone at the death by Benzema.
Bale crossed from the left towards Sergio Ramos. When the ball was cleared to Benzema he bent his shot past Roberto Santamaria to give Real Madrid a 3-2 win they barely deserved.
