David Luiz pens two year contract extension with Chelsea

David Luiz has signed a new two-year contract at Chelsea to keep him at the club until 2021.

Luiz’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season and the Brazilian had been locked in discussions for much of the campaign.

The 32-year-old is seen as essential to Maurizio Sarri’s plans and at last an agreement has been reached.

Luiz said: ‘I am so happy to be here and to have this opportunity to stay. I love this club and I still have the ambition of a young player.’

‘It means a lot to reach another European final, and we still have the opportunity to finish in the top three of the Premier League this season and I will continue to try to do my best to help the team.’

Chelsea Director Marina Granovskaia added: ‘We are delighted David Luiz will be staying with the club. He has set the perfect example to those around him throughout the campaign and been a huge influence on and off the pitch.

‘With the Europa League final still to come, we hope to finish off the season with silverware and David will be central to that success in Baku and beyond.’

The new deal breaks the mould of not handing new deals at Chelsea to players over the age of 30, which saw John Terry and Frank Lampard both leave in the past.

It comes with Chelsea facing a transfer ban for the next two windows and not being able to add any new players until summer 2020.

They are set to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland after losing their appeal against FIFA’s decision.
