Atletico Madrid sign Kieran Trippier from Tottenham for £20m

Tottenham Spurs full-back Kieran Trippier has completed a move to Atletico Madrid, the Spanish club confirmed on Wednesday.

Trippier, 28, put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Wanda Metropolitana.

Atletico paid out £20 million ($25m) for the player, a fee that could arise in the future due to add-ons and bonuses negotiated between the two clubs and also becoming Atletico Madrid’s first English player in 95 years.

The full-back arrived in Madrid on Wednesday morning and much has been made of his brilliant David Beckham-like delivery from the right and the accompanying set-pieces. Juventus and Napoli had expressed an interest in the Bury-born defender, who last summer attracted the attention of Real Madrid.

But the La Liga side won the race for the right back as they see Trippier as an ideal replacement for Juanfran.

Trippier is likely to make his debut against Getafe on August 18 in the stadium where he lost the Champions League final last May.

The now-former Spurs defender was left out of Mauricio Pochettino’s pre-season tour squad of Asia to complete the deal.
