Gareth Bale ‘caught’ playing golf as Madrid lose to Spurs despite Zinedine Zidane saying he was too ill to travel

Gareth Bale has been pictured playing golf while his Real Madrid team-mates were losing to Tottenham – despite claims he was too ill to travel to Munich for the game.

Zinedine Zidane said Bale was too unwell to go to Germany for a pre-season clash with the Welshman’s former club. But Bale himself had already said he would not be there as he was too distressed after Real Madrid pulled the plug on his £1.2million-a-week move to China.

Real went down 1-0 to Spurs but Bale was snapped on the golf course by El Confidential on the evening of the game. And his agent Jonathan Barnett confirmed Bale had a round, saying: ‘Yes it’s true, he was helping to clear his head.’

‘He has not traveled because he did not feel… He was not well and, speaking with doctors, it was better to stay in Madrid,’ said Zidane when asked about Bale by reporters. But the Spanish publication then revealed Bale had instead been spending his time playing golf at Banco Santander City, in Boadilla del Monte.

Bale was spotted teeing off on the 14th hole at around 8pm on Tuesday evening, with the game having kicked off at 6pm Spanish time. Madrid have not followed up on their comments about Bale, and it remains unclear if or when he will return to the first-team fold.

An exit for the Welshman appeared imminent and he looked to be heading to Jiangsu Suning in the Chinese Super League though an unfortunate knee injury to Marco Asensio threw a spanner into the works.

The mercurial Spaniard is set to be out for the season, and was frequently used ahead of Bale in the forward line by Zidane.

Real pulled the plug on the Bale deal on Saturday, the day after their embarrassing 7-3 defeat by city rivals Atletico in New Jersey. Now light on options, Madrid look set to keep Bale as a very costly back-up, despite his relationship with Zidane worsening as a result of the whole saga. Recently Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett labelled Zidane ‘a disgrace’ for the way the club’s record signing has been treated.

With the transfer window officially closing on August 9, Madrid have little over a week to resolve the situation or retain Bale’s service until at least January when the mid-season window opens. Bale has three years remaining on his current Madrid deal worth over £350,000-per-week.
