Real Madrid 3-1 Atalanta(4-1 agg): Benzema nets his 70th Champions League goal as Los Blancos book their place in the quarter-finals with Ramos and Asensio also on target against the Italians

Real Madrid progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-1 victory over Atalanta this evening, securing the tie.

Karim Benzema put Los Blancos ahead following a mistake by Marco Sportiello.

Vinicius Junior was brought down in the box by Rafael Toloi, allowing Sergio Ramos to score from the penalty spot.

Luis Muriel struck a fine effort from a free-kick to make matters interesting late on, but Marco Asensio put the tie beyond doubt with a crisp finish from close range.

As a result of their win, Madrid returns to the last eight of the competition after a two-year absence.

The opener came after a loose pass from Marco Sportiello went straight to Modric. The 35-year-old motored into the area and then pulled the ball back for Benzema to score.

He became only the fifth player in the history of the European Cup behind Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Raul to score 70 goals in the competition.

Vinicius should have made it 2-0 on 52 minutes but he put his shot wide from three yards out after having done the hard work dribbling through the heart of the Atalanta defence.

He made amends winning a penalty on 58 minutes and Ramos stepped up to shoot past Sportiello and leave the Italians needing three goals.

Muriel’s scored a sensational free-kick on 82 minutes, however. The Belgian got his fingers to it but it curled past him.

Real Madrid reacted immediately with Lucas Vazquez racing away and substitute Marco Asensio making it 3-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate.

With Eden Hazard still injured Madrid no longer scare rivals in this competition but Ramos, Modric and Benzema have 12 Champions Leagues between them, they are not ready to bow out this year just yet.

Benzema has scored 14 goals for Real Madrid since Cristiano Ronaldo left in 2018. The same number Ronaldo has scored for Juventus in the same period in the same competition.

Real Madrid returns to LaLiga action at the weekend on the road at Celta Vigo.

Atalanta has to turn the page following their defeat as they face Hellas Verona away on Sunday in Serie A.
