West Ham 0-1 Chelsea: Timo Werner winner seal Blues top four spot against 10 men Hammers

Chelsea pick up all three points!

The Blues climb to fourth in the Premier League table, and sit just one point behind Leicester and three points ahead of West Ham in fifth.

And it was Werner who pounced to score the game’s only goal, finishing a fine attacking move before half time to which West Ham had no response.

Timo Werner does superbly to roll his man, he spreads it out wide to Chilwell who puts the ball on a plate for the German to slot home beyond Fabianski.

It’s not a huge gap but it’s hard to see West Ham overhauling Chelsea from here.

West Ham will be disappointed but their Champions League hopes aren’t extinguished yet.

All they can do is keep going.

Chelsea edge out West Ham in a close encounter that will have significant ramifications for the Champions League race.

Tuchel’s team did what they do so well these days, nabbing the lead through Werner and seeing the rest of the game out.

West Ham picked up briefly at the start of the second half but on the whole were far too timid to cause Chelsea problems.

Balbuena’s late red card killed the game for the Hammers when he clears the ball upfield and with his studs up as he made a direct contact with Chiwell’s calf.

Chelsea assert their dominance over unfancied opponents, then, while West Ham’s limitations are starting to show.

They’re still having a fantastic season and have a great chance of getting into Europe in some form.
