Villarreal 1-1 Manchester United (11-10 on penalties): Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s trophy hopes shattered as Red Devils lose Europa League final in Gdansk after marathon penalty shootout

Villarreal secure their first major European trophy by winning the Europa League with a dramatic penalty shootout win over Manchester United.

As a nerve-tingling night ended with a pressure packed shootout after a draining 120 minutes, some superb penalty-taking saw the score mount to 11-10.

Gerard Moreno saw his first-half effort cancelled out by Edinson Cavani, and the two sides failed to add further goals to the during normal and extra-time.

All 20 outfield players scored from the spot, leaving it to the keepers to decide the contest. Geronimo Rulli scored his kick before denying David de Gea to secure the crown for the Spanish side.

Unai Emery has now won the Europa League for a fourth time, earning his first title since 2016.

United’s last taste of silverware success came in the same competition under Jose Mourinho, with a 2-0 win over Ajax sealing their triumph.

There’s a strong case to be made that neither team was good enough on the night, but the fact of the matter brought about from this penalty shoot-out is that Manchester United’s wait for a trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer goes on.

It is desolation for the Red Devils. They finish second in the Premier League and the Europa League this year. They entered as favourites and they leave empty-handed, shut down on the night.

Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani’s fine campaigns, among other members of this United team, come to an end with nothing to show for it.

The game opened up dramatically with United in full flow and Rashford should have put them ahead in the 70th minute when Fernandes got free down the right – possibly offside but not flagged – and picked out his teammate unmarked in front of goal.

Rashford was furious with himself after the ball got caught under his feet and he guided it inches wide.

Although United played out the 90 minutes looking the stronger side, Unai Emery was much quicker going to his bench and Villarreal’s fresher legs saw them come closest to winning it in extra-time.

Both teams now end their respective campaigns, but when the new season begins Villarreal will join Manchester United in the Champions League as a result of their win tonight.
