Czech 0-1 England: Raheem Sterling first half strike seal victory and last 16 spot for the three Lions

Sterling’s first-half goal seals a 1-0 win for England over the Czech Republic.

He hit the post with a shot in the second minute before finding the back of the net 10 minutes later when he headed in Grealish’s cross.

It was a much quieter second half, but Henderson thought he’d doubled their lead late on with his first England goal, only to be denied by the offside flag.

England finish top of Group D and they’ll face the runner-up from Group F in their round-of-16 tie at Wembley next Tuesday.

They are a tidy side and this was never an entirely comfortable evening with such a slight lead to defend, but Jordan Pickford made one genuine save and England had much the better chances.

With the next match almost certain to be against one of France, Germany or Portugal, it’s fair to say the tournament proper for Gareth Southgate and his players begins next Tuesday. One imagines they know that improvement is required.

The Czech Republic started the day in top spot, but that loss, coupled with Croatia’s 3-1 win over Scotland in the other group game, means they’re through as one of the best third-place teams.

They’ll have to wait to find out who’ll they play in their next match.
