Luke Shaw slumps after collision with Dani Carvajal

Luke Shaw suffered a serious-looking head injury in a clash with Dani Carvajal during England’s UEFA Nations League defeat by Spain.

The Manchester United full-back lay prone on the Wembley turf for some time while several medical staff tended to him.

Shaw received oxygen and was carried off on a stretcher after 53 minutes and replaced by Danny Rose.

The 23-year-old collided with the Real Madrid defender’s arm shortly after winning a header from a long ball.

Shaw went down hard and in a heap on the ground and laid motionless a his team-mates rushed to his side and immediately called for the medics to come over.

The left-back was down for around five minutes before he was lifted on to a stretcher and withdrawn from the pitch.

The challenge was described as ‘reckless’ by Gary Neville as Sky Sports decided to not show a replay of the incident.

The FA later said Shaw was “walking and talking” in the dressing room when the final whistle was blown.

Spain won 2-1 at Wembley thanks to goals from Saul and Rodrigo after Marcus Rashford had fired England in front.

Shaw’s injury came as he made his first England start for three years having won back his place in the United starting XI.

“No one knows. I was really close to losing my leg.

“I didn’t know that until six months later, when the doctor told me. I would never have stopped, even if he’d said there was a worry, I would have tried. But I only found out six months later.”

It’s been a long road back for the defender who has only just rediscovered his best form.

Shaw has started every one of United’s four opening Premier League games this season and put in impressive performances. He was also named United’s Player of the Month.
