Manchester United 0-0 Liverpool: Reds leapfrog Manchester City in the league table despite failing to capitalise on game at hand as they are held by the Red Devils in injury fest at Old Trafford

Liverpool go top of the league but failed to capitalise on game in hand over Manchester City in the title race as they are held at Old Trafford.

Manchester United had to make three substitutions in the first half as there were injuries to Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard who had initially replaced Mata.

The Reds are now one point clear at the top.

MATCH FACTS AND STATS

Man Utd XI: De Gea, Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, Herrera (Pereira 21), McTominay, Pogba, Mata (Lingard 25, Sanchez 43), Lukaku, Rashford.

Subs not used: Bailly, Fred, Dalot, Romero.

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Liverpool: Alisson, Milner, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson (Shaqiri 72), Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Salah (Origi 79), Firmino (Sturridge 31), Mane.

Subs not used: Keita, Lallana, Mignolet, Alexander-Arnold.

Manager: Jurgen Klopp

Referee: Michael Oliver

A diving header from the progressive Gini Wijnaldum was deflected wide off Scott McTominay with 20 minutes left and the young midfielder did enough to put off Matip as the resultant corner arrived. Klopp, at least hunting victory in theory, then sent on Xherdan Shaqiri, the player who had won the game for Liverpool when these teams met at Anfield earlier in the season.

United were not without ambition and perhaps looked most dangerous from their own set pieces. One such delivery resulted in Matip firing in to his goal after Chris Smalling had won the ball at the far post. Smalling, though, was offside. Just.

Liverpool’s lack of punch saw Salah removed with 12 minutes left, meanwhile. His replacement was the young Belgian striker Divock Origi and that suggested Liverpool were prepared to go a little bit more direct as they chased the victory they needed.

As it was the final sniff of the game was United’s. Smalling stayed up after a free-kick and when the ball was recycled down the right the central defender was only inches away from a cross to the far post.
