Manchester United have reportedly made one final contract offer to Juan Mata, whose current Old Trafford deal expires at the end of the season.
The 31-year-old attacking midfielder, who joined United in January 2012, is into the final two months of his spell at the club.
United have reportedly offered Mata a new one-year deal, with the option of a further 12-month extension.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Mata is keen to stay at United but had previously been holding out for a definitive two-year contract.
Mata’s wages are also a sticking point, with the player – who is not a first team regular at United – currently earning £170,000-per-week.
Clubs in La Liga, including Barcelona, are said to be monitoring the situation surrounding Mata, who cost £37.1million when he joined them from Chelsea, under the management of David Moyes.
However Mata would likely also have to take a pay cut with any of the Spanish clubs, while his status as a popular and respected member of the United dressing room may also persuade him to stay in England.
Mata, who has scored three goals in 21 Premier League appearances this season, has also reportedly been offered an ambassadorial role at United when he stops playing.
