Chelsea continued their pre-season campaign with Mason Mount scoring twice in a high-scoring win over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.
The visitors fell behind to Josh Barrett’s improvised lob but Ross Barkley and Kenedy turned the score around by the break.
New Royals signing Michael Morrison volleyed in a corner but Mount’s interventions restored the advantage, only for Sam Baldock to strike with 20 minutes left.
However, the Blues held out to ensure another victory for Frank Lampard’s side.
Reading were the most dangerous side early on, with Danny Loader heading against the post from Jon Swift’s corner.
With 13 minutes gone they had the breakthrough, Josh Barrett collecting his own deflecting shot and lobbing Willy Caballero from the edge of the box. Shortly after, Liam Moore conceded a free-kick centrally and Ross Barkley curled home a stunner to equalise with Chelsea’s first shot on target.
The visitors were ahead at the break when Kenedy sent a low shot into the far corner, but new signing Michael Morrison tapped home a corner to level on 49 minutes.
Both sides would hit the crossbar, firstly Teddy Howe’s wayward cross striking the woodwork, before David Luiz’s beautiful control, turn and shot were inches away from a goal.
Half-time substitute Mount then scored twice in two minutes to seal the victory. Firstly he seized on a loose ball on the edge of the box and slammed home. He then tapped in after Michy Batshuayi had set him up following an error from Royals keeper Sam Walker. The lead was cut when Sam Baldock raced onto Michael Olise’s through-ball.
Chelsea now have two pre-season friendlies remaining. Those are against Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and then Germany for Borussia Monchengladbach.
