Valencia 1-1 Barcelona: Leo Messi salvages a point for the Catalans after cancels out Ezequiel Garay’s early opener at the Estadio de Mestalla

With their Champions League turbo button switched back off Barcelona failed to beat Valencia at Mestalla and go into the international break trailing Sevilla at the top of La Liga.

After that dynamic but draining display at Wembley on Wednesday their league form fell foul of their defensive foibles once again and although they recovered from going behind they drop two points against Marcelino’s team.

Barcelona conspired to concede their first corner after just 45 seconds and their first goal after 76 seconds.

Dani Parejo took the kick and Ezequiel Garay turned it in from close range after Gerard Pique had somehow managed to duck and nudge the ball on with his back.

Valencia looked to build on the early lead and Goncalo Guedes powered down the left and pulled the ball back to Kevin Gameiro who held up for Michy Batshuay. His shot was pushed out for a corner by Marc Andre ter Stegen.

It was Guedes first and practically last contribution. After 10 minutes he pulled up and had to hobble off nursing what looked like a groin injury.

The energetic Batshuayi was then teed-up again by Gameiro and this time Ter Stegen held the Chelsea loanee’s shot.
