Zlatan Ibrahimovic has landed himself in hot water after he was caught elbowing Mohamed El Monir in the face during LA Galaxy’s 3-2 win over LAFC on Friday.
The Swede stole the show after he netted a hat-trick in the derby branded ‘El Trafico’ before clashing with rival coaches at the full-time whistle.
However, Ibrahimovic could be facing a lengthy MLS ban after elbowing El Monir in the face which has left the Libyan requiring surgery.
Video footage showed the former Manchester United star appear to look twice at El Monir before leaping in the air for a header with the defender.
The bad-blooded incident came minutes after Ibrahimovic’s Galaxy team-mate, Joe Corona, was on the end of a late tackle by El Monir.
The challenge angered Ibrahimovic before he left a mark on the left-back moments later.
VAR was available to the referees for the match but was not used to review the incident. Following the ill-tempered affair, LAFC goalkeeper coach Zak Abdel came on to the pitch to confront the 37-year-old which led to Ibrahimovic telling him to ‘go home, you little b****’.
Ibrahimovic has already served a two-game ban this year for violent conduct following an incident with New York City FC ‘keeper Sean Johnson. If found guilty of intentionally trying to elbow El Monir, the ban will likely be more severe than his first.
Ibrahimovic is second in the league’s top scorers chart with 16 goals in just 17 games.
